What's in Your Water?

Many of us rely on water filters to purify our tap water, believing they remove all harmful contaminants. However, recent studies reveal that most filters don't provide complete protection against the wide array of pollutants present in U.S. drinking water. A 2023 U.S. Geological Survey study found that at least 45% of the nation's tap water contains one or more types of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), also known as "forever chemicals". These persistent compounds, used in everyday items from nonstick cookware to rain jackets, have been linked to serious health issues.But PFAS are just the tip of the iceberg. Other common contaminants include:

  • Heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and chromium-6
  • Disinfection byproducts formed during water treatment
  • Nitrates from agricultural runoff
  • Pharmaceuticals and personal care products
  • Microorganisms resistant to chlorine, such as Cryptosporidium

While many water filters can reduce chlorine and improve taste, they often fail to remove these more insidious contaminants. Standard carbon filters, for instance, may not effectively filter out PFAS or heavy metals. The health implications of these contaminants are significant. Arsenic and chromium-6 are known carcinogens, while lead exposure can cause developmental issues in children. PFAS have been associated with various health problems, including cancer and hormone disruption. A 2024 update revealed that 143 million Americans have drinking water that has tested positive for PFAS.
